The issue is fuel, not fitness<\/strong><br \/>\nFrom the first event, energy and fluid expenditure exceeds intake. This deficit may not be immediately noticeable, but it carries over into subsequent events or competition days.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Depletion of carbohydrate stores<\/strong><br \/>\nCarbohydrates are the primary fuel for high-intensity performance.<br \/>\nDuring the first event (or Day 1), a large portion of muscle glycogen is consumed. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Without adequate replenishment:<\/span><br \/>\n\u2022 depletion continues<br \/>\n\u2022 performance declines in later events<br \/>\n\u2022 perceived exertion increases<br \/>\n\u2022 legs feel heavy and transitions slow down<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Hydration and sodium mismatch<\/strong><br \/>\nEven mild dehydration, when combined with insufficient sodium intake, increases cardiovascular strain at the same workload.<br \/>\nWithout a hydration strategy, the deficit carries into the next day.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Common outcomes include:<\/span><br \/>\n\u2022 unexplained elevated heart rate<br \/>\n\u2022 headaches<br \/>\n\u2022 cramps or muscle spasms<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Poor between-event nutrition choices<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Common mistakes:<\/span><br \/>\n\u2022 high fat and fiber intake \u2192 delayed digestion, gastrointestinal discomfort<br \/>\n\u2022 excessive protein \u2192 minimal immediate fuel contribution<br \/>\n\u2022 insufficient total intake due to stress \u2192 prolonged energy deficit<\/p>\n<p>These choices compromise performance later in the competition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Poor timing<\/strong><br \/>\nBetween events, refueling windows are short.<br \/>\nMissing them means starting the next effort already in deficit.<\/p>\n<p>In multi-day competitions, Day 1 refueling directly determines Day 2 performance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. Fix #1 \u2013 Between-events protocol<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">0\u201315 minutes post-event:<\/span><br \/>\n\u2022 30\u201360g carbohydrates<br \/>\n\u2022 500\u2013750ml fluids<br \/>\n\u2022 adequate sodium (especially with high sweat rates)<\/p>\n<p>60\u2013120 minutes before the next start (if time allows):<br \/>\n\u2022 easily digestible carbohydrate-based meal<br \/>\n\u2022 low fat and fiber<br \/>\n\u2022 small protein amount<\/p>\n<p>Avoid large meals, high fat\/fiber foods, and unplanned snacking.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7.
